September - A Time for Curiosity

September has always felt like a little bit of a reset to me. The slower pace of summer begins to ramp back up, routines return, and there is often a renewed feeling of What’s ahead?

We tend to think of learning as something we do when we're young. We go to school, learn a skill, earn a degree, take a class. But learning doesn't have to stop just because we're no longer sitting in a classroom.

Many of the most important lessons I have learned later in life.

  • What I actually enjoy.

  • What I want less of in my life.

  • What I want more of in my life.

  • “No” is a complete sentence.

  • It’s okay to try something new just because I am curious about it.

  • That I can change my mind about things.

  • Something I once thought I wanted may not be what I want anymore.

Growth doesn't have to be dramatic.

You don't need a five-year plan or a completely new life.

Life’s Golden Ticket by Brendan Burchard

I picked up Life’s Golden Ticket by Brendan Burchard to read this month. Heaven forbid I pick a book out of the ever growing stack of TBR! This is a story of personal growth and second chances. I feel like that is where I am at the moment. While I might not need a second chance, I am looking at a new second chapter for my life. Maybe your growth this month looks like picking up a book you've been meaning to read, taking a class, trying a new recipe, or learning something just for fun or maybe having a conversation you've been avoiding.

Ask yourself this question….

What am I curious about right now?

That's a simple question, but it can open a lot of doors.

At Holly Wellness Coaching, I believe wellness isn't about having every area of your life perfectly figured out. It's about becoming more aware of where you are, what matters to you, and where you want to grow. Sometimes creating room for yourself means creating room to learn.

So this September, give yourself permission to be a beginner again.

  • Be curious.

  • Try something.

  • Change your mind.

  • Follow an interest that doesn't have to lead anywhere.

  • You might be surprised by what you discover.

If you want to explore more:

If September has you feeling curious about learning something new or thinking about what might be next, here are a few places to start:

Read: Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans
Read: The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown

Listen: A Certain Age with Katie Fogarty
Listen: School of Midlife with Laurie Reynoldson

Watch: TED Talk: “How curiosity paved the way to self-learning”— a short look at how curiosity can become a pathway to learning and discovery.

You don't hav e to read the whole book or listen to every episode. Pick one that catches your attention and see where your curiosity takes you.

Or skip the resources altogether and simply grab a journal and ask yourself:

What would I love to learn if I didn't have to be good at it?

That might be where your next bit of growth begins.

Creating balance together,

Paula

I believe mental and emotional wellness should be accessible for all women. My journey has taken me from post-partum days to becoming a certified wellness coach. There were challenges along the way and I feel it is important that women know they are not alone and they can have wellness while on their own journey.
